CANADIANS LOVE JAPANESE JUNK FOOD

Daniel TJ || International Reporter || February 6, 2024 || Comments & Reactions

As a Canadian setting foot in Japan for the very first time, my excitement was palpable, but let's be real – my main mission?

To dive headfirst into the world of Japanese junk food. And let me tell you, Tokyo did not disappoint.

IN MY OPINION, JAPAN IS BEST!

From the moment I landed, it was like entering a food lover's dream.

The streets were lined with stalls and shops offering a dizzying array of snacks and treats, each one more tempting than the last. And being a proud Canadian, I was ready to put my taste buds to the test.

First up on my junk food journey? Takoyaki. Now, as someone who's used to poutine and maple syrup, the idea of octopus-filled balls might have seemed a bit out there, but one bite and I was hooked.

The crispy exterior, the creamy octopus filling, the tangy sauce – it was a flavor explosion unlike anything I'd ever tasted.

Next, I tackled the towering okonomiyaki. I'll admit, I was a little intimidated by the sheer size of these savory pancakes, but once I dug in, there was no turning back.

Loaded with cabbage, pork belly, and all the fixings, it was like a hug in food form – warm, comforting, and oh so satisfying.

But let's not forget about the sweets, because Tokyo knows how to do dessert. Taiyaki, with its fish-shaped shell and creamy custard filling, was a delightful surprise.

And don't even get me started on melon pan – a fluffy bun with a crunchy crust that was equal parts indulgent and delicious.

And of course, I couldn't leave without trying karaage – because what Canadian doesn't love fried chicken? Crispy on the outside, juicy on the inside, and seasoned to perfection, it was everything I could have hoped for and more.

So, to my fellow Canadians planning a trip to Japan, let me just say this: come hungry. Because the junk food scene in Tokyo is unlike anything you've ever experienced, and trust me, you won't want to miss a single bite.
