Hi there! I’m Daniel TJ International Report for SavvyJapan-Today.com with my associate Michael Machida, and for the past 30 years and 24 years respectively, We've been living a unique adventure as Americans who made the leap to Japan.

With my wife and 2 children - I have had the pleasure of creating an international family traveling around the world and back to America every chance we get.

From career growth to culture shock, and from building a life in Tokyo to understanding the heart of Japanese traditions, I’ve seen and lived it all.

The Inspiration

Why start this site when there are countless books and guides about Japan? Well, while books can provide facts, they can’t capture the pulse of daily life—the people, the rhythm of Tokyo streets, or the intimate details that make living in Japan such an incredible experience.

When I arrived in Japan 24 years ago, I didn’t speak the language. I didn’t know anyone. There were no friends waiting for me at Narita Airport, no roadmap to navigating Japanese culture, and definitely no clue about counting yen. Coming from America’s Midwest and spending 15 years in Hawaii, I thought I had a grasp of Asian culture. But Japan quickly humbled me.

Living here meant starting from scratch—understanding not only a new language but also traditions, unwritten social rules, and a way of life vastly different from the West. And I wouldn’t trade those challenges for the world.
