TOKYO FRIENDS 4 LIFE: A PLACE FOR RELATIONSHIPS - THAT LAST

Daniel TJ International Correspondent Tokyo, Japan

So you live in Japan. Or you will be. Or you are thinking of it. Or you are dreaming of it. No matter the case, living overseas is crazy fun but more crazy fun with friends. However, you may or may not know it, but making friends overseas can be daunting.

You see, people come and go in Japan. Well, for Internationals this is true. Did you know that the average time a visitor lives in Japan is about two years?

This does not include college students or people with fixed time periods. This statistic is about people who live and work in Japan to explore the world, to find a purpose in life, to just get out of their country for a bit. To learn Japan. That sort of thing.

I have been here in Japan for about 26 or 27 years now. I have seen friends come and go. At times I have a lot of new friends. At times I have zero friends. Why?

Basically, it's about the statistics. People last in Japan on average just two years. Then they go back home or to a different country.

After careful consideration and a lot of interviewing international people here in Japan, I have decided to start up a new way to not only make friends, but to make new friends in Tokyo that is easy, fun, and safe. Yes! Safe!

I mention safe because this is very important living in one of the largest cities in the world. Safety is extremely important.

How do we keep things safe?

Well, for starters, when we get a new member registration we vet them. We meet them before they can join.

We conduct an interview with everyone for approval. Yes. Everyone must be approved by a board that votes accept or deny.

So, we do not accept everyone who signs up. We think this system will keep everyone safe while still being able to have fun while enjoying all that Tokyo has to offer.

What are the age limitations?

Good question. The easy answer is between 18 years old and up. The sky's the limit. However, please keep in mind that some of the things we do is mountain hiking and other very strenuous outings - so if you are elderly, please pick and choose activities based on your personal requirements.

What do we do as a group?

First of all, we are not a religious organization. We are not a traditionally minded conventional group. We are relaxed and never push any kind of agenda on anyone.

We are doing things legal in Japan but we know everyone has a wild side and that's fine.

We just chill, hang loose, party sometimes and sometimes do things that demand focus and attention like go to musicals, attend art museums, travel around Japan, learn a new hobby, attend Japanese martial art classes, we dance, we sing at karaoke clubs, we walk around the different sections of Tokyo, and we just have fun.

What we did last year:

🌆 Exploring Tokyo With Friends: A Year Later, Still Smiling

Last year, we all met up in Tokyo with big eyes, hungry hearts, and the kind of energy only a group trip can spark. We planned to explore, laugh, eat too much, get lost, and find ourselves again in this city of neon, temples, and endless surprises.

Tokyo didn’t disappoint. It never does.

🐾 Shibuya’s Giant Scramble of Life

We gathered under the loyal gaze of Hachiko, then held our breath as we crossed Shibuya’s famous scramble as one noisy, laughing cluster. Someone yelled “jump!” and we tried — badly — but captured the moment anyway.

🎤 Singing Our Hearts Out in Shinjuku

That night, a karaoke booth became our world. For three glorious hours we belted ballads and J-pop, sharing fried snacks and one epic, theatrical “Bohemian Rhapsody” finale that nearly shook the walls.

✨ Walking Through Light at TeamLab Planets

Barefoot and wide-eyed, we wandered through digital water, mirrors, and floating flowers. The beanbag floor defeated us — seven adults stumbling like newborn deer — but the laughter made it magic.

🏮 Asakusa Traditions & Sweet Treats

In Senso-ji’s old stone shadows, we drew fortunes. Three unlucky slips tied to temple racks (with varying levels of dramatics), followed by warm taiyaki and sugary melon-pan to heal our destiny.

🌊 Odaiba Nights & Arcade Battles

From Ferris-wheel views to Taiko drum duels, Odaiba turned us into kids again. The night breeze, the skyline, the arcade cheers — Tokyo felt like our playground.

🍶 Izakaya Hopping in Ebisu

We squeezed into tiny wooden counters, clinked glasses, shared smoky yakitori, and learned that “kampai” sounds even brighter when seven voices say it at once.

🍣 Dawn at Tsukiji

We lined up before sunrise, rubbing sleep from our eyes. Sushi melted on our tongues, tamagoyaki warmed our hands, and one brave soul tried uni just for the story.

🎀 Harajuku Wonderland

Matching headbands, rainbow cotton candy, and a purikura photo strip that still lives in someone’s wallet today — Harajuku did its job.

⚡ Akihabara High Scores

Crane games, rhythm battles, and one plushie triumph that was cheered like a world championship. Geek heaven, group heaven.

🌳 Yoyogi Park Peace

Blankets, snacks, frisbees, slow afternoon sunshine — the city paused for us. Sometimes friendship is just sitting together doing nothing at all.

♨️ Relaxing in an Onsen

We soaked, we steamed, we froze, we laughed. The ice sauna had us squealing, and the massage chairs swallowed us whole.

🚢 Drift on the Sumida River

A gentle boat ride along soft city light — cameras clicked, jokes flew, and someone tried to narrate like a tour guide and failed beautifully.

🎳 Competition at Round1

Bowling strikes, darts bragging, batting cage heroics — we discovered hidden talents and harmless rivalries. Tokyo’s indoor playground won us over.

🍵 Ginza Dessert Pause

Elegant parfaits, glossy matcha sweets, and a spirited debate over “the most Instagrammable dessert.” The winner? Every bite.

👒 Vintage Gold in Shimokitazawa

Second-hand jackets, silly hats, and spontaneous street photoshoots — we left carrying more clothes and even more joy.

⭐ Golden Gai Stories

Seven friends tucked into tiny bars, trading stories with locals and singing old songs we didn’t know we remembered. Golden Gai always feels like a movie.

⛩️ Quiet Moments at Meiji Shrine

Among towering trees, the world hushed. We wrote wishes — health, adventure, love, and another trip like this one someday soon.

🌌 Tokyo Skytree Heights

We leaned over the glass floor, pretending to fall, laughing too hard, pointing to tiny trains far below and promising: “We’ll be back.”

🎠 DisneySea Magic

Headbands, popcorn buckets, water shows, and rides that turned us into kids again. Joy is universal — Tokyo just amplifies it.

🌴 Sunset in Kamakura

We finished at the ocean. Great Buddha, seaside croquettes, and a sunset that blushed across the sky while Mt. Fuji hid shyly in the distance.
We stood there quietly — seven people, one perfect moment.

✨ Looking Back, Looking Forward

Tokyo gave us flavors, lights, temples, songs, and laughter.
But the real gift was simpler:

Seven people becoming a family in a city that never stops moving.

We’ll return — because friendship deserves cities like Tokyo, and cities like Tokyo deserve memories like ours.
