VALENTINES DAY: JAPAN

Daniel TJ | International Reporter | February 13, 2024 | Valentines Day In Japan

If you have never been to Japan during Valentine Day, you may not know that Valentine Day is a bit different than that of Western countries. How?

Firstly, on Valentine Day in Japan - it's the women who gives chocolate or gifts to the men. In Western countries, men give chocolates to women as well as other gifts, and dinner as well.

In Japan, the women often gives Valentine Day chocolates to all or most of the men at their place of employment.

In Western countries, women do not have to give chocolates to men at the office unless they wish to as a friendly gesture.

In Japan, women will make dinner for her boyfriend or husband after he arrives back from work.

In Western countries, most men will take their girlfriends or wives out to the restaurant of choice. Which is usually an expensive restaurant that is very romantic.

In Japan, many couples go to Love Hotels from Tokyo to Osaka and everywhere in between. In Western countries, they have hotels - however they are not referred to as Love Hotels. They are hotels that offer normal lodging for businesses, families, or traveling couples mostly.

Love Hotels are a unique Japanese cultural norm that many Japanese nationals have used at least once in their lives. However, there are other Japanese who use Love Hotels on a weekly basis.
